Ratification of the Covenant (24:1-8)

24:1 Ve  EL Mosheh amar, Ale El YHWH (יהוה),

"Thou, and Aharon, Nadav, and Avihu, and sheive'im ziknei of Yisrael; and worship you afar off.

24:2 And Mosheh alone shall come near YHWH (יהוה): but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.

24:3 And Mosheh came and told the people all the Words of YHWH (יהוה), and all the right-rulings: and all the people answered with one voice, and said:

All the Words which YHWH (יהוה) has said will we do.

24:4 And Mosheh wrote all the Dvar YHWH (יהוה), and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and sheteim esrei matzevah, according to the shivtei Yisrael.

24:5 And he sent young men of Benai Yisrael, which offered Olot, and sacrificed shelamin of oxen to YHWH (יהוה).

24:6 And Mosheh took half of the blood, and put it in basins; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

24:7 And he took the sefer Ha Brit, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that YHWH (יהוה) has said will we do, and be obedient.

24:8

Vayikakh Mosheh et-hadam vayizrok al-haam vayomer: “Hineh dam-ha be rit asher karat YHWH imakhem al kol-hadevarim haeleh:”

And Mosheh took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said: "Behold, the Blood of the Covenant, which YHWH (יהוה) has made with you concerning all these Words."

24:9 Then went up Mosheh, and Aharon, Nadav, and Avihu, and shiv'vim Ziknei Yisrael:

24:10 And they saw Elohei Yisrael: and [there was] under His feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in His clearness.

24:11 And upon the chiefs of Benai Yisrael he laid not his hand: also they saw Elohim (אלהים), and did eat and drink.

24:12 And YHWH (יהוה) said to Mosheh,

"Come up to Me into the mountain, and be there: and I will give you tablets of stone, and the Torah, and Mitzvot which I have written; that you may teach them."

24:13 And Mosheh rose up, and his minister Yehoshua: and Mosheh went up into the mount of Elohim (אלהים).

24:14 And he said to the elders:

"Wait here for us we come back to you. behold, Aharon and Hur are with you: if any man have any matters to do, let him go to them.

Reading Shemot 24:3, Rabbi Simlai taught that when the Israelites gave precedence to “we will do” over “we will hear,” 600,000 ministering angels came and set two crowns on each Israelite man, one as a reward for “we will do” and the other as a reward for “we will hearken.” But as soon as the Israelites committed the sin of the golden calf, 1.2 million destroying angels descended and removed the crowns, as it is said in Exodus 33:6, “And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments from mount Horeb.” (Babylonian Talmud Shabbat 88a.)
