Vaye b'rekh Elohim et Noach ve et banav, va yomer lahem:
Peru u revu u male u et-the earth:Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
9:2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moves [upon] ha adamah, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
9:3 Every moving thing that lives shall be oklah (food) for you; even as the yarok esev (green plant) have I given you all things.
9:4 But flesh with the life thereof, [which is] the blood thereof, shall you not eat.
9:5 And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man.
9:6 Shofech dahm (whoso shedds man's blood), by man shall his blood be shed: for in the tzelem (image of) Elohim (אלהים) made He man.
9:7 And you, be you fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.
And Elohim (אלהים) spoke to Noach, and to his sons with him, saying:
9:9 And I, hinei, I establish My Brit with you, and with your zera after you;
9:10 And with every living creature that [is] with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.
9:11 And I will establish My Brit with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
9:12 And Elohim (אלהים) said:
This [is] the token of the Brit which I make between Me and you and every living creature that [is] with you, for perpetual generations:
9:13 I do set My Keshet (bow קשׁת) in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a Brit between Me and the earth.
9:14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the eretz, that the keshet be'anan (rainbow) shall be seen in the cloud:
9:15 And I will remember My Brit, which [is] between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
9:16 And the keshet be'anan (rainbow) shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting Brit between Elohim (אלהים) and every living creature of all flesh that [is] upon the eretz.
9:17 And Elohim (אלהים) said to Noach:
This [is] the token of the Brit, which I have established between Me and all flesh that [is] upon the earth.
9:18 (vi) The Noakh-Shem connection
And sons Noach, that yatza (went forth) of the ark, were Shem, and Cham, and Yefet: and Cham [is] the father of Kenaan.
9:19 These [are] the three sons Noach: and of them was the whole earth overspread.
9:20 ויחל נח אישׁ האדמה ויטע כרם׃
Vayakhel Noach ish haadamah vayita karem:
Noach, a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard.
9:21 וַיֵּשְתְּ מִן-הַיַּיִן וַיִּשְכָּר וַיִּתְגַּל בְּתוֹךְ אָהֳלֹה׃
Vayeshet min-hayayin vayishkar vayitgal betoch oholoh.
And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
9:22 וַיַּרְא חָם אֲבִי כְנַעַן אֵת עֶרְוַת אָבִיו וַיַּגֵּד לִשְנֵי-אֶחָיובַּחוּץ׃
Vayar Cham avi Khena'an et ervat aviv vayaged lishnei-'echav bachutz.
And Cham, the father of Kenaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.
9:23 And Shem and Yefet took a garment, and laid [it] upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces [were] backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness.
9:24 וַיִּיקֶץ נֹחַ מִיֵּינוֹ וַיֵּדַע אֵת אֲשֶר-עָשָׂה לוֹ בְּנוֹ הַקָּטָן׃
Vayiketz Noach miyeino vayeda et asher-'asah lo beno hakatan.
And Noach awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him.
9:25 And he said, Cursed [be] Kenaan; a eved of avadim shall he be to his brethren.
9:26 And he said, Baruch [be] YHWH (יהוה) Elohim (אלהים) of Shem; and Kenaan shall be his eved.
9:27 Elohim (אלהים) shall enlarge Yephet, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Kenaan shall be his eved.
9:28 And Noach lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.
9:29 And all the days of Noach were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.
Why did Noach curse the Kenaan?
Chazal Rab and Samuel [differ,] one maintaining that he castrated him, whilst the other says that he sexually abused him. He who maintains that he castrated him, [reasons thus;] Since he cursed him by his fourth son, he must have injured him with respect to a fourth son But he who says that he sexually abused him, draws an analogy between 'and he saw' written twice. Here it is written, And Cham the father of Kenaan saw the nakedness of his father; Now, on the view that he emasculated him, it is right that he cursed him by his fourth son; but on the view that he abused him, why did he curse his fourth son; he should have cursed him himself? — Both indignities were perpetrated. [Soncino translation] Notice that Noach only fathered three sons: Shem, Cham and Yefet.
In his Antiquities, Josephus tells us that Cham didn’t get cursed directly due to his ‘nearness in kin’ to Noach. Some rabbis believe that Noach thought it best not to curse Cham since Cham, along with Shem and Yefet, were already blessed by HaShem (See Gen. 9:1).
