48:1 And it came to pass after these things, that [one] told Yosef (יוסף), hinnei, avicha [is] sick: and he took with him his two banim, Menasheh and Efrayim (אפרים).
48:2 And [one] told Yaakov, and said, hinnei, your son Yosef (יוסף) comes to you: and Yisrael strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.
48:3 And Yaakov said to Yosef (יוסף), EL Shaddai (שׁדּי) appeared to me at Luz in eretz Kenaan, and blessed me,
48:4 And said to me, hinnei, I will make you fruitful, and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of people; and will give this eretz to your seed after you [for] an everlasting possession.
48:5 And now your two banim, Efrayim (אפרים) and Menasheh , which were born to you in eretz Mitzrayim before I came to you into Mitzrayim, [are] mine; as Reuven and Shimon, they shall be mine.
48:6 Your offspring whom you beget after them shall be yours; they will be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance.
48:7 And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in eretz Kenaan in the way, when yet [there was] but a little way to come to Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same [is] Beit Lechem. (Mikhah 5:2)
48:8 And Yisrael beheld Yosef (יוסף)'s banim, and said, Who [are] these?
Yosef (יוסף) said to his father,
"They are my sons, whom Elohim (אלהים) has given me in this place."
And he said,
"Please bring them to me, and I will bless them."
Now the eyes of Yisrael were dim for age, [so that] he could not see. And he brought them near to him; and he kissed them, and embraced them.
48:11And Yisrael said to Yosef (יוסף), "I had not thought to see your face; but in fact, Elohim (אלהים) has also shown me your offspring!"
48:12 And Yosef (יוסף) brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.
48:13 And Yosef (יוסף) took them both, Efrayim (אפרים) in his right hand toward Yisrael's left hand, and Menasheh in his left hand toward Yisrael's right hand, and brought [them] near to him.
48:14 And Yisrael stretched out his right hand, and laid [it] upon Efrayim (אפרים)'s head, who [was] the younger, and his left hand upon Menasheh 's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Menasheh [was] the bachor.
48:15 And he blessed Yosef (יוסף), and said, Elohim (אלהים), before whom my avot Avraham and Yitzchak walked, the Elohim (אלהים) who has fed me all my life long to this day,
48:16 The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be called upon them, and the name of my avot Avraham and Yitzchak; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.
And when Yosef (יוסף) saw that his avi laid his right hand upon the head of Efrayim (אפרים), it displeased him: and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Efrayim (אפרים)'s head to Menasheh 's head.
48:18 And Yosef (יוסף) said to his avi, Not so, my avi: for this [is] the bachor; put your right hand upon his head.
48:19 And his avi refused, and said, I know [it], my son, I know [it]: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.
48:20 {Shabbat siddur}
And he blessed them that day, saying,
"In you shall Yisrael bless, saying,
May Elohim (אלהים) make you as Efrayim (אפרים) and as Menasheh!"And thus he set Efrayim (אפרים) before Menasheh".
48:21 And Yisrael said to Yosef (יוסף), hinnei, I die: but Elohim (אלהים) shall be with you, and bring you again to eretz your avot.
48:22 Moreover I have given to you one portion above your achim (brethren), which I took out of the hand of the Emorite with my sword and with my bow.
